CHALLENGE |
 |
The City of Chattanooga hired Purple Monkey Studios,
Inc. to redesign and develop their Web site.
The clients wanted a site that helped all site
visitors find the information they needed quickly.
The site also needed to enable Chattanooga residents
to connect with their government easily.
|
|
| |
Thousands of pages of Chattanooga’s original
site needed to be updated, streamlined, and made easily
maintainable. More than 15 departments, divisions, and
city services, including the police and fire departments,
the zoo, golf courses, parks and recreation, performing
arts, finance, and city council, were included in the
site. |
|
| |
The City of Chattanooga had several specific requirements:
 |
Purple Monkey Studios needed
to create a visual "look and feel" that
reflects the atmosphere in the community.
This look needed to be carried throughout
the site. |
 |
The City of Chattanooga organized the
original site by internal departments.
This made searching for specific information
difficult and time-consuming for site visitors,
most of whom were not familiar with the
departmental structure of the city. |
 |
The City of Chattanooga wanted a system
that allowed all of their departments the
ability to update and add new information
quickly and easily. |

SOLUTIONS |
 |
| |
|
Purple Monkey Studios conducted
focus groups in Chattanooga to identify
the new Web site’s target audiences.
After reviewing the data, Purple Monkey
Studios recommended that the site target
Chattanooga residents, tourists, and visitors,
as well as citizens with new businesses
and citizens with existing businesses.
This would allow Purple Monkey Studios
to organize the site information into three
main categories: Live, Work, and Play.

| Additional
solutions for the City of Chattanooga
site included: |
|
 |
Created "mini-portal
pages" of information grouped by audience
type. For
example, a site visitor planning new construction
in the city can access a page of links
to various departments for permits, inspections,
guidelines, and zoning. |
 |
Launched an online survey. The
survey, aimed at Chattanooga-area residents,
helps obtain additional information on specific
areas for improvement. |
 |
Develop the site using a content
management system. The RedDot
content management system has been quickly
adopted by all non-technical staff and
makes updating the site quite easy. |
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Purple
Monkey Studios designed the City of
Chattanooga’s Web site with a
more contemporary, professional, yet
friendly look. |
 |
The site
is easy to navigate, and the information
is accessed by task, as well as department. |
 |
The Web
site provides site visitors with new
information on a regular basis. |
| |
|
|
 |
Information
is user-friendly and organized to help
site visitors access information more
easily |
 |
The visual
design of the site is attractive, incorporating
images of local attractions and residents. |
 |
The content
management system allows the City of
Chattanooga staff to maintain the site
themselves, so the content remains
current. |
